DHOAS Lump Sum Explained
DHOAS Lump Sum: Why How You Use It Matters More Than Receiving It
Some eligible ADF members have the option to access their Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme (DHOAS) benefit as a lump sum.
On the surface, this can feel like a powerful opportunity.
And it can be—when used correctly.
The book explains that a lump sum does not automatically improve outcomes. Money does not create strategy. Education does.
Many people instinctively want to use a lump sum to reduce debt or make a property “feel safer.” But the guide repeatedly challenges emotional decision-making around property.
Reducing debt on a poorly selected property does not fix the underlying mistake.
It simply makes the mistake more comfortable.
The key lesson from the book is that lump sums should be viewed as strategic resources, not emotional relief. Used at the right time, they can improve flexibility, assist with structuring, or support a broader plan. Used reactively, they often lock people deeper into suboptimal positions.
The entitlement itself is neutral.
The outcome is determined entirely by how it is applied.
