ADF member weighing family advice against professional guidance before an investment property decision

Why Your Parents’ Property Advice Might Be Costing You Money

Often, the hardest people to ignore the advice of, no matter how bad it is, are your family and, in particular, your parents. Just remember to ask yourself: if you want to turn out like your parents financially, take their advice. If you don’t, that’s worth sitting with before you act on it.

The One Exception

Some people are very fortunate to have wealthy parents. Those people should pay very close attention to what their parents have to say about creating wealth — they’ve actually done what you’re trying to do.

But for the remaining 95 per cent of us, the better approach is to smile politely, thank our parents for caring about us so much, and then go and get the assistance of professionals instead.

Why This Is Harder Than It Sounds

This isn’t really about whether your parents mean well. Almost always, they do. The difficulty is that caring about you and having the right financial expertise to guide you are two completely different things, and it’s easy to confuse the two because you trust the person giving the advice.

That trust is exactly what makes family advice so hard to filter out compared to advice from a stranger or a colleague. You’d dismiss a stranger’s uninformed opinion without a second thought. A parent’s opinion carries emotional weight a stranger’s never could, whether or not it’s actually informed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I ignore my parents’ advice about property investment? Not necessarily — it depends on whether your parents have actually built wealth through property themselves. If they have, their advice is worth serious attention. If they haven’t, their advice on this specific topic is likely to reflect the same financial position you’re trying to move beyond.

Why is it so hard to ignore family advice, even when it’s wrong? Because the advice comes wrapped in genuine care, which makes it feel more trustworthy than it may actually be on this specific topic. Caring about you and having financial expertise are two separate things, even though it’s easy to treat them as the same.

What should I do instead of relying on family advice? Thank them for caring, and separately, seek guidance from professionals who have genuine expertise and experience in property investment.
